Possible flashing light for Craig and Drummond

Posted Jan 26, 2012 By Kassina Ryder

Town staff will research installing a flashing light at the corner of Drummond and Craig streets, council heard at the committee-of-the-whole meeting on Jan 17.

Acting on an email from a resident, council passed a motion that will have staff look into the feasibility and cost of installing a flashing light on the corner. In the letter, the resident stated that vehicles often quickly top the hill at Craig Street, which is dangerous for pedestrians attempting to cross the road. A flashing light would remind drivers to slow down. The letter writer added that the crosswalks on Gore Street are poorly lit and inclement weather can affect drivers' visibility when pedestrians attempt to use the crosswalk.

Council directed staff to look into ways the lighting could be improved.

The letter also addressed concerns about school bus safety on Gore Street.

The writer stated that drivers often pass school buses on the street when they are letting children on and off the bus.

Council directed staff to inform the Police Services Board about the issue.

YARD BYLAW SENT FOR REVIEW

Council discussed a proposed yard maintenance bylaw that will impose fines on property owners who don't keep their yards clean and their grass cut. The bylaw includes fines for "inoperable" old cars, trucks and other vehicles that are being used for salvage. Fines for infractions were set at $125.

Town staff who need to inspect a yard or investigate a complaint must leave notice in the mailbox or front door prior to entering the property, the bylaw also states.

Council was expected to discuss the bylaw again at the council meeting on Jan. 24.
