EMC News - Easter Seals has recognized Perth's The Bargain! Shop as the District Golden Egg Award recipients for the Easter Seals Paper Egg campaign, which ran from March 16 to April 12, 2009.

The Bargain! Shop is Easter Seals' top national Paper Egg sponsor. In 2010 across the province $435,000 was raised during the three-week campaign. The Perth shop received the Golden Egg for raising $1,469.45 this year. Across the province the Bargain! Shop has raised $83,538, and national $213,034 was raised.

Kayley Trumbley, Easter Seals Development Manager, presented the award to Perth Bargain! Shop store manager Ted Armstrong.

"We couldn't have done it without the support of the Bargain! Shop staff, and of course the customers," said Armstrong. "They really supported the campaign."

The Easter Seals Paper Egg campaign started in 2000, and the Bargain! Shop has been participating in the campaign since 2007. Store clerks at participating retailers get in the spirit by selling Paper Eggs for $2. Customers who buy an egg write their names on the eggs, which are then posted on the walls in the store. Schools, hospitals and other organizations also get involved.

Proceeds go towards funding of essential communication and mobility equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, and communication devices, providing summer campaign experiences, and funding of recreational choices such as day camps, swimming and art classes.

Since 1922, Easter Seals Ontario has been serving and representing children with physical disabilities. Today more than 20,000 children in Ontario live with physical disabilities.

Easter Seals is recognized as an industry leader in providing specialized recreation programs for kids with physical disabilities at Easter Seals camps, including Camp Merrywood, located on 30 acres between Smiths Falls and Perth.

Built in 1948, Camp Merrywood began as a camp for children with polio, with only six campers attending in its first year. Today the camp offers programs such as sailing, canoeing, kayaking, pontoon boat rides, swimming, fishing, archery, pottery, arts and crafts, sports and games, an environment program, and white water rafting. Campers get to experience a variety of trips away from camp property. There are three to four-day canoe trips and one-night trips through the Rideau Canal system.

The site has 12 buildings including the camper cabins, a health hut, dining room and lodge, a music and theatre building, a nature building, swimming pool and accessible playground. The summer of 2005 marked the opening of three new winterized camper cabins to replace the existing six, allowing the camp to extend its summer season while accommodating 72 campers at once.
