EMC Lifestyle - The lineup to get in was long, and the event sold out - everyone who came to the Shipwreck's Fashion show for LAWS had a great afternoon, June 27. There was clapping and cheering as Marianne Style, Smiths Falls, brought exclusive Frank Lyman fashions down the run way - and capping the day off was a near $2,100 donation from Dallas Kennedy, owner/operator of the Shipwreck at Rideau Ferry.

LAWS wishes to thank Dallas Kennedy (owner of the Shipwreck) for her wonderful contribution to LAWS, to all the women and men who came out to take in a tasty lunch and an eye catching fashion show. Also to one donor who came forward with a $500 donation!! The fashion show was made possible because of the generosity of Marianne Style in Smiths Falls. Featuring some of the most glamorous and stylish clothing in the Ottawa Valley, Marianne Style is located on Beckwith Street in Smiths Falls.

Thank you to the hosts of this event and all those in attendance.

LAWS' YARD SALE THIS SATURDAY, JULY 10

Looking for a book you just haven't been able to find yet? What about an antique trunk you have been visualizing would go great in your den? Perhaps you have some household items on your wish list? Come on down to LAWS garage sales this summer. From 9 a.m. to 12 noon, July 10, July 24 and Aug. 21 you are sure to walk away with the treasures you have been looking for, and a few you weren't! All garage sales are at the LAWS shelter, located on Glenview Road.

WISH LIST

This week we are looking for some tents. Specifically, larger canopy type coverings. An old carport tent would be great, or even a gazebo canopy type of tent. We have some items that need to be covered at our shelter and we also need some small tents for our fundraising events. Any donations are greatly appreciated.

WISH LIST- COFFEE CANS

We are looking for donations of empty coffee cans. The 326 gram size are perfect and we need them with lids intact. A volunteer has offered to make donation jars for LAWS and so we need about 100! We are making our own donation cans to save the cost of buying pre-made ones which are very expensive.

THIS WEEK'S PETS

Our dog kennels are closed to the public and potential adopters due to two cases of kennel cough. We hope to reopen the kennels on July 12, provided no additional cases occur. Kennel cough is the canine equivalent of the common cold in humans, characterized by coughing, vomiting and fever. It is highly contagious and is treated with antibiotics. Donations of tinned food are requested during this time, for our poor dogs who find it difficult to eat their kibble.

This week we are featuring some fabulous cats available for adoption starting with Mickey. I am a dignified grey and white, neutered and declawed gentleman cat, who was brought in as a stray - imagine, me a stray! The shame of it and I am feeling sorry for myself by hating everyone and everything. I have refused to come out of my cage for the last three weeks, and I have growled, and hissed and swatted everyone who has come near me.

Jennifer says I am just really, really scared, and that is why I act so tough. Today, I came out of my cage, and visited the front office. I inspected everything, drank from the toilet (ah, the things you miss in a cage!) and met Zach. I growled and hissed at him, but he just ignored me. Jennifer gave me a catnip toy, and I started to feel a bit better. I got up on a volunteer's lap, and let everyone pet me (I still growled though, just to keep my reputation intact). Maybe if I found a real home, I could relax and be a good cat. It's just very hard to trust right now! I'm really not happy in the shelter - would someone give a grumpy cat a chance?

We are seeking a very special home this week for a very special kitty. Clara is an eight-year-old, short-haired, spayed female Torti. Sadly and mysteriously, Clara arrived at our shelter with chemical burns to over half her body. Despite her obvious discomfort and senior status, Clara has a loving and forgiving heart. She so deserves to find a safe and caring home. Please give Clara the second chance she needs to put her life back together again.

Nala is the cutest little kitten and at two-months-of-age she is just beginning a full and happy life. Nala is a Tortoiseshell, with medium-hair. She is a beauty with a face that anyone would fall in love with. She can be a bit shy around strangers but loves to play with her siblings and other felines.

My name is Smudge and I'm a glamour puss! I really, really am! I am a black and white neutered medium hair gentleman, who (let's face it), is just a step above the common cats. I'll let you pet me when I feel like it, and I'll smooch up to you, when I feel like it, but you must always remember that I am a 'Special Cat', and as such, I run the show. But even a special cat needs a home, and I really wish I had a special person to impress, and maybe love me a little. Special cats never beg - but surely, there's a home out there somewhere for me...
