EMC News - The Wilson Street corridor rehabilitation project continues to move ahead on a tight schedule. Perth town council has announced a special meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 23 to consider the awarding of the contract for the massive construction project.

"We continue to run this project very tight, and very fast," Director of Corporate and Environmental Services Jorgen Hoeven told councillors at a March 2 meeting of Committee of the Whole. The project must be completed by this time next year to qualify for two-thirds federal and provincial funding announced under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. The town will contribute the remaining third of the total $9 million project.

The town released the Wilson Street project tender documents Feb. 17. The tender for Phase 1 - Foster Street to Sunset Boulevard - will close March 15. Phase 2, Sunset Boulevard to Highway 7, closes March 12.

According to a report provided to Committee of the Whole by Hoeven, in order to process and award the tender as soon as possible, the town's consultant, Novatech Engineering Consultants Ltd., and town staff will immediately review and summarize the results against budget and grant allotments. The results will be presented to the Public Resource Group March 17.

"Due to time being of the essence, it is recommended that a special council meeting be convened for March 23, 2010, to expedite the award and thus the start date of the construction period," said Hoeven. The project is one of the largest the town has ever managed.
