Ratepayers go to Lanark council

Posted Mar 4, 2010 By Chris Must

EMC News - John Hall, founder of Lanark Highlands' new ratepayers association, was scheduled to appear before township council as a delegation Tuesday, March 2 to present a petition in support of his call for a zero tax increase in 2010.

Hall also told the EMC two motions would also be coming to council from the township's Corporate Services Committee. The first motion, he said, calls for a correction to a statement attributed to the township's Chief Administrative Officer, Tom Derreck. Derreck was quoted in the local media as saying that local taxes decreased in 2006.

Hall took issue with that statement, arguing that while the tax rate decreased by 10 per cent, taxes actually went up four per cent due to a significant general increase in assessment. Hall said he would like the CAO's statement corrected, "when the township finally issues the financial operation overview that is supposed to correct the items it feels are inaccurate in the flyer I distributed."

Hall produced a document, which he mailed to township residents at his own expense in January, calling for a zero per cent tax increase in 2010. In a presentation to council Jan. 19 Hall said "Taxes in Lanark Highlands are the highest of the six municipalities in the county that have a rural component."

A second motion coming before council March 2 from the Corporate Services Committee requested the CAO to prepare a schedule of potential meeting dates for pre-budget public information presentations, and circulate the potential meeting dates to council.

Hall said this motion came as the result of his request for clarification of the time-line of a pre-budget initiative recently announced by Mayor Bob Fletcher.
